History of Technology in English

Books continue to be a highly influential, yet in many cases antiquated, medium which instill schooling's implicit curriculum- not very different from the lessons taught from McGuffey's Eclectic Reader.

  1. Suzanne, I'm also an English major so I completely with your statement that while books are influential, they are also an antiquated teaching tool. Of course literature serves as the foundation of our discipline, however many students struggle with the strict linear format of traditional books. Reading page after page of dense material can be challenging for many students. Luckily, technologies such as ebooks and tablets now allow students to highlight and take note digitally. They also have the option to have the books read aloud from their device. You also mention the "implicit curriculum" taught in McGuffey's Eclectic Reader, which essentially teaches children to be moral, active citizens of this country. Books are a great way to teach children how to become valuable participants in our society through the moral lessons found in literature.
